Hiring the Right People for Your Team

When you have a job opening within your organization, there may be a level of urgency to fill the role as soon as possible. When seeking the best candidate to fill the position you don’t want to settle. Hiring the wrong person for the job can have a negative impact on the company. Here are 6 tips to help you when it comes to hiring.

Evaluate the needs for your company.

Know the role you need to fill. Research other companies in your region and industry to get an idea of salary and competition in the market. Review job postings to see what skills and responsibilities are being asked of candidates at other companies for the position you need to fill.

Be specific with job requirements.

Once you’ve evaluated the needs of your organization, be specific with the job requirements. It’s unfair and unrealistic to expect new hires to perform tasks that are not part of their original job duties or out of their skill set. Therefore, make sure the job roles are clearly defined with the qualifications and skill sets you seek.

Use various sourcing methods.

How and where are you posting your job? Utilize various avenues to cast a wide, but applicable net when hunting for a new a hire.

Hold multiple interview stages.

It’s hard to get a feel for someone within 30-minutes. You may see them put their best foot forward and do the formal small talk, but you won’t know how they’ll react under pressure.

Field candidates through phone interviews. As you go through your interview process, narrow it down to individuals you’d like to get to know better.

Invite them on-site.

  • Take them on a tour to see different aspects of the company.
  • Have them shadow someone in the department for which they are applying.
  • Take them to lunch.

Having in-person interaction allows you to see how they behave and interact with others. This can give you an indication of how they’ll fit within the company culture.

  • Are they polite?
  • Are they curious?
  • Are they engaged?
  • Are you able to carry on a conversation with ease?

Consider internal talent.

Perhaps the right candidate already works for your organization. If you invest in employee development and training, you may have an idea of who might be a good fit. As a manager within your company, you should prioritize getting to know your employees, their strengths and weakness, their goals, and ambitions. Then provide them with opportunities of growth, development, and promotion to achieve their goals.

Offer competitive benefits and compensation.

One of the biggest motivators for people is compensation. They want to know that they’re getting fairly compensated for their time, talents, and skills. When people are underpaid, they feel undervalued. They’ll get resentful, slack off, and complain. People should have and deserve peace of mind knowing that they are financially secure and cared for.

Hiring takes time and patience. But with careful consideration and a strategy in place, you’ll be able to find the right candidate to join your team.
