In today’s professional environment one of the top skills employers want employees to have is the ability to effectively resolve conflict. As humans we all have differences of opinions, behaviors and goals that could contribute to conflicting views or beliefs in the workplace.

When speaking of conflict, we’re talking about the situation between two or more parties with divergent interests where the parties believe the current aspirations are incompatible. In order for there to be a resolution, the parties must come to an agreement of solving most or all of the issues and dissipating the contention between themselves.

Here are 6 skills and resources to assist in conflict resolution:

1. Assertive Communication

Being assertive might suggest being harsh, but this isn’t the case. Instead, assertive communication is having the confidence of addressing your needs clearly, defending your boundaries and communicating with respect without belittling the feelings or needs of others.

2. Empathy

The ability to look at the situation from the point of view of the other party allows for a better understanding of emotions and feelings. Empathy fosters compassion and kindness and is a great facilitator to find common ground.

3. Listening

Listening to hear and not respond is an undervalued skill. Most people who are upset or defensive, are equipped with what they want to say without regard for what the other person is saying. If a resolution truly wants to be made, the ability to actively listen to the needs and concerns of another person, will facilitate a much more productive interaction.

4. Self-Awareness

Self-awareness is the knowledge and understanding of one’s own character and feelings. In tense situations you will be able to understand your role in the situation as well as potentially see from the perspectives of others.

5. Creative Problem-Solving

For both parties to feel satisfied, it will likely take compromise from everyone. Creative problem-solving can offer the opportunity for cooperation which will allow the parties to come together with an end goal in mind and devise a strategy to resolve their issue(s).

The creative problem-solving process is a tried and true method and can successfully help in matters of conflict.

      1. Identify the problem
      2. Research and gather data
      3. Map out challenges
      4. Strategize ideas
      5. Combine and evaluate the ideas of others
      6. Devise an action plan
      7. Take action
